So you can’t afford any of the fitness machines and don’t know exactly what to do to stay fit.

Well, have you tried fitness videos?

There’s a lot of great and unique advantages to fitness videos.

More and more people are turning to them for weight loss and home fitness training.

Most of the routines performed involve body weight exercises but some may require some sort of light fitness equipment such as adjustable dumbbells or resistance bands.

Still a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a piece of home fitness equipment.

From yoga and pilates programs for beginners to extreme fitness for more advanced users, the fitness video industry has certainly grown and diversified.

Regardless of what shape you’re in, there are work out videos for all preferences, fitness levels, and genders.

Heck, you’ll even find pregnancy workout DVDs.

So What are the Best Work Out Videos?

There are a ridiculous amount of exercise videos out on the market.

Some are effective but many are just simply a waste of time and energy.

Ok then … so what are some of the best work out videos?

In order to answer that question, there’s a few things you’ll need figure out.

What You Need to Know

  1. What’s Your Fitness Level?

We’ve noticed that some videos aren’t suitable for beginners despite what they say as their programs include very intense work outs that require at least a modest amount of experience.

Now, we’re not saying the routines should be easy but they should at the very least allow the user to make the transition easily and safely.

  1. What Motivates You?

drill-sergeant-yellingWe see it too often … people starting off strong with a look of determination on their face only to slowly end up turning off the fitness video and pop in a movie.

What will get you to continue using the fitness videos?

Do you need a hot instructor?

Maybe you need someone in your face like a drill sergeant?

Once all of that is figured out, move on to number 3.

  1. What Type of Exercises Do You Want to Do?

Feel like yoga may be your cup of tea?  Maybe some dance fitness video?  How about something really intense like the High Impact Interval Training videos?

Whatever you decide,  choose one with realistic expectations.

Don’t expect immediate results but stay motivated and focused and you won’t be sorry.

If you’re a beginner, you can go with a few of the DVDs listed below or you can go on Youtube and check out some of the free videos there.

Jillian Michaels: For Beginners

Workout for Dummies DVD (All of the series)

If you’re at an intermediate level, chances are you can follow most of the programs available.

Most of them cater to both intermediate and advanced users.

But some of these programs are intense.

If you’re able to keep up and you’re consistent, you’re guaranteed to see results.

We’ve witnessed countless number of people and personally know a few who have followed these programs and have literally transformed their bodies.

So, if you’re mentally prepared and are dedicated to make a change, any one of the following DVDs will give you the fitness you need … and more.

insanity

1. INSANITY

This program certainly lives up to its name and happens to be our favorite and most hated fitness program.

It’s just that good and painful.

The main fitness routines in this video are fast and beyond insane.

It follows what the program refers to as “Max Interval Training” which appears to follow the HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) formula but at longer sessions.

Unless you’re already in fantastic shape, you’ll need to attempt it several  times before you can finish one of the routines.

Fortunately, every program is followed by some stretching (cool down) which you will be thankful for as you ponder what the hell you just went through.

If you’re not sweating by the time you’re finished with your warm ups, then you’re not doing it right.

This grueling 60 day program will take your overall fitness to whole new level.

Stick with it and you won’t regret it.  That’s a promise.

What You Get:

10 DVDs with some of the most intensive programs you will experience.

Insanity Calendar-This is actually really helpful if you use it.

What You Need:

Space.

Maybe a mat for some of the routines but it’s up to you.

p90x

2. P90x

Our second favorite is Tony Horton’s P90X.  It’s comparable to Insanity with respect to the intensity level but utilizes dumbbells, bands, and pull up bars with some of its routines instead of body weight.

It’s a demanding 90 day program that provides intensive work outs and targets every and we mean every part of your body.

One benefit that P90X has over Insanity is strength training.

The use of equipment provides the lean muscle everyone should be aiming for.

It follows the “Muscle Confusion” practice that simply means changing things up.  A relatively simple concept.

If you’re goal is for strength training and lean muscle, then P90X is something you should consider.

There are 3 different kits but just stick with the base kit.

The other kits come with additional equipment that is cheaper to purchase separately.

3. Jillian Michaels: No More Trouble Zones

We all know Jillian Michaels and needless to say, she knows what she’s talking about.

Expect nothing less from her video, No More Trouble Zones.

It’s an excellent circuit workout that targets specific areas of your body so you can pick and choose what you want to do.

If you’ve got problem with your abs, follow her circuit that focuses on biceps and butt.  An odd combination, we know but who are we to question her methods?

4. Jillian Michaels: 30 Day Shred

This is one of Jillian Michaels best programs in our humble opinion.

It comes in 3 levels with 10 days scheduled for each level.

It follows what she refers to as her 3-2-1 Strength/Cardio/Ab training circuit: 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio, and 1 minute of abs.

Each workout starts off with a warm up period … then the work out … followed by a cool down period.

The workouts consist of various routines targeting all parts of your body and intensifies as you go up a level.

Follow this program of hers and you’ll see the results in the 30 days as promised.
